CREATIVE WAYS TO USE YOUR BUSINESS CARDS!

On the Back
Print a special discount offer or coupon on the back. People will keep it because they intend to use the coupon.
Make the business card the ad specialty: Print your company information on letter openers, CD openers, magnets, pens, highlighters, key chains, mouse pads, mugs, luggage tags, and other items that people will keep because they are useful.
Attach a business card to an ad specialty: For example, give business card holders as a thank you gift and place your business card in as the first one.
If you routinely give out seasonal gifts or specialties, attach your business card. Examples: candy canes at Christmas, heart shaped containers filled with candy for Valentine’s Day, or even a sandwich bag of candy with a card stapled to it.

Unique Places to Put Them

Tuck them into the product before delivery. If you sell gift baskets, tuck one inside the basket before delivering it to your customer. Place your card in the delivery bag. You’ve seen how some restaurants staple a menu to their bags for takeout; of you use bags; staple your card to the outside of the bag.

Send a business card in every piece of correspondence – letters, invoices, even your electric bill. Sooner or later, those cards will be used.

If you are crafty, incorporate them into your designs: embellish them with rubber stamps, or blend them with other art projects. You can also mount them to greeting cards you create and send to customers and prospects.

When mailing out information: Take a number 10 envelope, facing you and upside down. Fold the envelope in thirds, when you turn it around, there is a little pocket to tuck your card in. Include it in the mailing. Using a colored envelope makes the presentation even more dramatic.

Scan your card in and use it as a graphic for when you exchange links with other websites. The other site can use your graphic as the link.

Place them in library books as if you used them as bookmarks. Visit bookstores place them in books related to your business.

Keeping Them Handy:

Use them as bookmarks so you’ll always have some readily available if you meet someone at school, in the library, on the bus, or at the park where you like to read.
Have your spouse, family, and friends carry some of your cards with them in case they meet someone who might be interested in your product or service.
Wear them! Use them as nametags at meetings and conferences instead of the “Hello, my name is…” type of tags.
Keep a stack of cards everywhere you might need them – in your car, your jacket pocket, your briefcase, your purse or wallet, in your planner, at home, anywhere you can think of. They you’ll always have some on hand when you meet a prospect.

When to Use Them:

Give them out during your personal meetings when you meet someone new: at your church, your children’s soccer games, at lunch with your friends when someone brings a guest.
Ask neighborhood businesses if you may display your cards near their registers.
Tack them to bulletin boards at supermarkets, restaurants, retail stores and the library – anyplace that has a bulletin board.
Give out two cards at a time – one for your prospect or client, and one for her/him to give away.
Place some on the table when you leave a restaurant.
Agree to mail the cards of other businesspeople in the mailings you do, if they will do the same for you. Your networking circle will grow as your cards are passed around.

How to REALLY drink Coffee - the Italian way!

The Italians have the art of drinking coffee honed to perfection - They have their rituals and expectations that are strictly adhered to so if you are in Italy, you should be aware of them!

For example, the use of word espresso. This a technical term in Italian, not an everyday one. As espresso is the default setting and single the default dose, a single espresso is simply known as un caffè. If you want an 'espresso' you can simply ask for a "caffe" and remember to drink in quickly. Espresso is not made to sip casually, it is made to be drunk in two or three sips at most.

Coffee ~~is not~~ can be served by itself and is generally served after a meal, with the exception of breakfast. Any coffee after breakfast should not have milk in it (unless it is a macchiato)and cappuccino orders after 11 am are often laughed at.(corrections accepted, thanks Simona !)

Requesting a mint frappuccino in Italy is like asking for a single malt whisky and lemonade with a swizzle stick in a Glasgow pub. There are but one or two regional exceptions to this rule that have met with the blessing of the general coffee synod.
In Naples, you can order un caffè alla nocciola – a frothy espresso with hazelnut cream.
In Milan you can impress the locals by asking for un marocchino, a sort of upside-down cappuccino, served in a small glass which is first sprinkled with cocoa powder, then hit with a blob of frothed milk, then spiked with a shot of espresso.

Coffee is generally served in a way that allows you to down it in a couple of shots - there is no lingering and sipping slowly!

Popular coffees ordered in Italy:

Espresso : known a Caffe in Italy, served in a 3 oz or demitasse cup. Strong in taste with a rich bronze froth known as a crema on top.
Doppio : Simply a double espresso.
Ristretto: More concentrated than a regular espresso that is made with less water.
Lungo or Caffe Americano: An Espresso made with more water - opposite a Ristretto.
Macchiato: Espresso that is "marked" with a dollop of steamed milk on top.
Corretto: Espresso that is "corrected" with grappa, cognac or sambuca.
Cappuccino: Espresso with foamed milk and containing equal parts espresso, steamed milk and foamed milk.Usually drunk in the morning (never after a meal)
Cappuccino scuro: Cappuccino prepared with less milk and is a darker color.
Cappuccino chiaro: Cappuccino prepared with more milk (but less than a caffe latte) and is lighter in color.
Caffe' latte: Espresso made with more milk than a cappuccino but only a small amount of foam. In Italy it is usually a breakfast drink.
Latte macchiato: Steamed milk that is "marked" (sometimes ornately) with a shot of espresso coffee.

The Breakfast Mask

Had to try this again - its so good for any type of skin really.....

Is good enough to eat....not recommended!!

Complete with protein and whole grains, this breakfast-themed mask is used to correct and calm oily skin.

1. Combine an egg yolk, a tablespoon of honey, then a tablespoon of olive oil (yes, olive oil) and half a cup of oatmeal

2. Apply to the face for 15-20 minutes

3. Rinse with lukewarm water and then moisturize

Some Italian Must Haves!

Here are some of my Must haves - my pantry is never without!

Tipo '00' flour - can be hard to find but a must for pasta making. I used to send for it from Italy but found a cheaper alternative and can now order it on line. I think some stores stock it - but haven't found any where I live!

Mantova Olive Oil -
I love the large can - and the taste is superb.
Except when i occasionally fry, I try to stick to a Mediterranean diet and a drizzle of this oil on tomatoes is excellent!

Italian Sea Salt - tastes of the mediterranean! I love thick sea salt, it seems to add a different flavour.

Fini Balsamic Vinegar - by far the best i have found. I have become addicted to balsamic and its the only vinegar i will use in a salad dressing.

Bambinella - do you know what that is!!

Bambinella is like a tiny pear...and tastes super delicious! I have never seen it anywhere but at home in Malta...and maybe in Sicily though I can't be sure. I don't think there is another word for the fruit though if anyone else had heard of it let me know!

A number of farmers affiliated within the Ta Qali Producers Organisation have struck an important deal with Marks & Spencer’s of the UK and have started to export quantities of ‘bambinella’ to the chain store at very competitive prices.Speaking to Business Today, the President of the Ta’ Qali Producers Organisation Peter Axisa expressed his satisfaction with the agreement reached with Marks & Spencer as it opened a brand new ‘niche market’ for Maltese farmers with a unique product.“Next Thursday will see the fourth consignment of bambinella to be exported to the UK in just over four weeks, and farmers are working round the clock to ensure an excellent quality product,” he said.

Marks & Spencer were reportedly quick to contract the Maltese producers for bambinella exports, and asked for immediate consignments of what they are describing as ‘tiny pear’ given that there is no word for bambinella in English.

According to sources, bambinella grows in limited numbers in the UK, and they are considered ripe for harvest later in the year.While a number of new trees are being planted in Kent, the Maltese bambinella has the unique blush that gives them a distinct appearance.

The exported bambinella are being sold in Marks & Spencer flag ship stores around the UK, displaying a Maltese cross, and clearly labelled ‘produced in Malta’.

Pisellata - Peas and eggs

I have no idea where this recipe came from - all I can say is that it was always used when we could not think of anything too cook. Its fast, easy, and rather nutritious.

I am just giving the basic idea on how to make this. Adjust the quantities according to how may are eating!

Ingredients: (per person)

1 egg

about 1 - 1/2 cup peas (fresh or frozen)

1/2 onion

1 rasher bacon.

about 1/4 cup broth or water and a piece of stock cube

Method

Fry the onion and bacon in a tad of oil, then add the stock/broth until almost translucent.

Add the peas and cook until almost done

Add the eggs (as if you were frying them sunny side up)

Put the lid on the pan for a few minutes

READY!!!

Weird? i think so but it tastes great!

Mincemeat

It's only August, but preparation for Christmas starts now. My all time favourite is Mince Pies.

It's important to make the mincemeat well ahead - this is actually late but i thought id make some instead of buying the mince meat for my pies. The recipe to make the pies will follow at a later date.

Mincemeat does not actually contain any meat (it originally did) but is a spicy preserve comprising a mixture of dried fruit, apple, suet and candied fruit and spices steeped in rum or brandy. It has been part of British cookery for centuries and mince pies are traditionally served at Christmas

Ingredients

For 6lb mincemeat:

12oz (350g) seedless raisins

8oz (225g) sultanas

8oz (225g) currants

4oz (110g) cut mixed peel

4oz (110g) chopped dried prunes

12oz (350g) soft brown sugar

1lb (450g) cooking apples - peeled, cored and grated

8oz (225g) shredded suet

grated rind and juice of 2 oranges

grated rind and juice of 2 lemons

2oz (50g) chopped almonds

2oz (50g) chopped pecan nuts

1 tbsp (15g) mixed spice

1 tsp (5g) freshly grated nutmeg

5fl oz (150ml) brandy

Method

1. Mix all the ingredients together, except half the brandy in a large ovenproof bowl and cover and leave to stand overnight.

2. The next day, preheat the oven to 110C/225F/Gas ¼, cover the bowl with foil and place in the oven for about 3 hours.

3. Allow to cool, then mix in the rest of the brandy and put into sterilised jars.

Figolli - Traditional easter delights from Malta

The figolla is a traditional almond pastry and according to mythology, the figolla was presented as a gift to Astarte, the goddess of fertility.This recipe was kindly sent to me by my cousin Paula in Malta.

This is the first time she is giving out this recipe, and according to all that have tasted them they are pretty good.She would like to stress that She buys whole almonds, blanches them herself and breaks them up in very tiny pieces but not so much that they look like powder - more like crumbs

PASTRY

yields approx 4-5 depending on the size of your shapes

14 oz self raising flour+ 1 teaspoon baking powder,sifted

6 oz margarine,

rind of a large lemon,grated

4 tbs sugar,

2 eggs, beaten

and a little fresh milk to bind if necessary.

Make Pastry

Mix the dry ingredients, add the margarine, eggs and milk if necessary - work to a smooth dough.

FILLING

20 oz ground almonds,

8oz icing sugar+12 oz sugar or 20 oz icing sugar,

1egg+1yolk,

juice of 1/2 lemon,

1 tbs brandy.

Mix all in one stage and allow to chill for at least 1 hour in the fridge.

MAKING THE FIGOLLI
Heat oven to 325F.

Roll out a piece of pastry until it is 1/2 inch thick on a well-floured surface.

Cut into desired shapes (Figolli are traditionally cut into the shape of a bird, a fish or a duck and the size of each Figolla is between 8 to 10 inches).

You need two cut-outs for each Figolla.

Spread the filling on one of the cut-outs.

Place the other cut-out on top and press the edges to seal.

Brush the top of the Figolli with the beaten egg.

Bake until the Figolla turns to a golden colour.

Let the Figolla cool down and then decorate with coloured icing.

You can also cover with chocolate.

Place a hollow chocolate egg in the center of each Figolla using some soft icing to hold it in place.

Figolli can be really elaborate - with cut out pictures, richly decorated etc etc - I prefer the iced ones - with the Easter egg on top!

No Cook Cake

This no cook dessert is a favourite of mine. The biscuits used are 'Morning coffee' or 'Marie biscuits'. You can also use the LU Cookies or Rich Tea Biscuits that can be bought from Amazon.

I have not seen the Marie or Morning Coffee type in the US except at the PBX on an armed forces base! They have all sorts of European food!

This was really popular when we were young as it was one thing we were allowed to make as it did not involve anything electric or hot! I believe the British were the first to make it - came to that assumption because of the British Biscuits used but if anyone knows the origin...please let me know!

Ingredients:

200g of butter,

200g of caster sugar,

five small eggs, (beaten well)

250g of plain chocolate,

About 2 cups of strong coffee,

Two packets of plain biscuits (see above).

Method

Melt the chocolate ( I use the microwave, checking it and stirring it until it melts. You can also use a double boiler )

Beat the butter with the caster sugar until light and creamy.

Beat in the melted chocolate and then the eggs, one at a time.

Dip the biscuits into the coffee

Use a largish dish that isn't too shallow make layers of coffee-moistened biscuits alternating with layers of the chocolate cream.

Refrigerate for at least 24 hours.

If you really want to be decadent, top with some fresh whipped cream!

Grate some chocolate curls on top.

Nostalgia

I recently found out that my old home back in Malta was up for sale. It brought back so many memories of when i would cook for a family. It is so rewarding to see your children and husband enjoying a home cooked meal, and the smell of baked potatoes, or a cake remains in my memory.

Fresh bread was delivered every day - all I had to do was leave a bag tied to the door knob with the required amount of money and the baker would take the money and leave me a loaf of bread.

The entrance to homes in Malta often has two doors. An exterior wooden one and interior one, usually glass.

When the wooden door was closed, it generally meant we are out, asleep, or don't feel like visitors (!!) but when you saw the glass door it meant welcome to our home!

My home was about 600 years old...we had exposed the limestone walls, it had a vaulted ceiling and many 'mohbas" or hiding places - for example, going up the stairs, there were shelves to one side, which actually opened up and led to a hidden room. The basement was also made up of three rooms, connected by a narrow passage way and had its own door to the outside. This was because it was used as a stable for the horse ( or donkey) that was used as transportation.

The Maltese are very houseproud - you find very few 'cookie cutter' homes and even though the newer buildings are similar to each other, the island is full of 'houses of character' that are highly in demand for their unique style. They, however, need constant maintenance as the windows and doors are all made of wood and need to be treated against the fierce summer sun.

The ceilings were about 18feet high - no need for a/c downstairs and the basement was always nice and cool in the summer.

We had made extensive alterations - all keeping in the style of the period, the only exception being installing a/c upstairs and the pool

You may notice that the pool is not fenced in. There are no regulations for fencing in pools in Malta like there are in the USA - and as far as i know, there have never been any child drownings in a pool! why? maybe because children are not left alone, and being island folk we all know how to swim!

If I had known i would not live there for ever i would have taken more pictures as this house was really a dream.

Not too sure what these are really called but they are super fun to make! I used extra fine cotton yarn to make the flowers then securely attached them to elastic bands. Perfect for little gifts and stocking stuffers for Christmas...yes...thats day is soon here!

I was going through a pile of towels i had bought (and that did not match with my bathroom) and decided to put them to good use. I remember having a kind of bath mitt as a child, that i could fill with bits of soap and wash with. So i made some Soapies!

They can be easily slipped over the hand. I ran some elastic through the top of one of them to make a mitt.

I have ready made but if you would like a custom set just e mail me and i'll make you one in any colour you like. They make great little gifts!

Yummy Breakfast Mask

Is good enough to eat....not recommended!!

Complete with protein and whole grains, this breakfast-themed mask is used to correct and calm oily skin.

1. Combine an egg yolk, a tablespoon of honey, then a tablespoon of olive oil (yes, olive oil) and half a cup of oatmeal

Left over Treats

A very easy but tasty idea. You will need some pre bought mille feuille/pasta sfoglia, or puff pastry rolled out very very thinly. I find this recipe great when you have left over pastry from another project! You can also play about with the ingredients, adding some hot chili peppers, fresh herbs or even fruit!

Ingredients:
Left over pastry

1 / 2 cup grated cheddar - the sharp type

1 / 2 cup grated Gouda

(or any other cheeses you may like!)

1 / 3 of a small onion

Salt and freshly ground pepper

Herbs of choice

Method

Grill the onion.

Defrost the mille feuille pastry.

Mix the cheeses, season.

Spread a generous amount of the cheese on top of the pastry and add some chopped onion.

Add the herbs- if fresh even better!

Roll up both sides till they meet in the middle

Using a sharp knife, cut into about1 /2 inch slices
Lay flat on a cookie sheet and bake at 400F for about 20 mins

If you prefer sweet over savoury, I would use sugar, cinnamon and a touch of apricot jam as the filling.

"What has this to do with cooking?" you may ask...well..... NOTHING but having had dogs for several years I was always irritated by the way the national dog of Malta was incorrectly associated with Egypt.

Kelb tal-fenek means 'rabbit dog' and until some years ago, semi wild dogs could still be found around farms and rural areas. The farmers would feed them as they chased away the rabbits that ate their crops. The last time I saw one in the wild was in the 1970's.

For many years, this breed was considered one of the oldest dog breeds. Recent DNA analysis reveals, however, that this breed is actually a recent construction, bred to resemble an older form.The theory that the breed is of more recent origin is supported by DNA analysis carried out by Dr Elaine Ostrander in 2004.This DNA data now puts to rest the "Egyptian Myth" and proves the breed did not originate from Egypt.

The Kelb ta-Fenek was developed into its modern form on the islands of Malta and Gozo. It is often classified as a sight hound, but hunts both by sight and scent.The breed was brought to Britain in the 1920s and called the Pharaoh Hound because it resembled dogs featured on the walls of ancient Egyptian tombs.

The breed was recognized by the British Kennel Club in 1974. There is no empirical evidence which links these hounds to ancient Egypt and no documented mention of the Kelb tal-Fenek prior to the 17th century. The Kelb tal-fenek was developed to hunt rabbits which were, and to some extent still are, an important food source. When hunting over the rough and rocky Maltese terrain they make full use of acute hearing, keen eyesight, exceptional sense of smell, great speed and agility. Unknown outside its homeland until the 1960s the Pharaoh Hound has swiftly achieved popularity, both as a show dog and as a companion.

Easy Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise can be tricky to make but with a bit of patience, I have found it is actually possible to make a really tasty example. Also, not using the yolks together made is less likely for the mayonnaise to separate. Not sure why!

Ingredients:

2 FRESH eggs - they will not be cooked so make sure they are at least date stamped.

1 to 1 1/2 cups of oil. Traditionally olive oil is used but peanut oil would also work if you don't like the taste of olive oil

1 to 2 tablespoons of lemon juice.

Pinch of salt

Method:

You only need the egg yolks so separate them from the whites.

The yolks will be used one by one.

If you are using a food processor, put one yolk in there - if using an electric beater put in a bowl.

I tried both the beater and the processor and it boils down to a personal preference.

Add a pinch of salt.

Start beating, processing, and add about 3/4 of the oil - in a thin drizzle - to the mixture.

This has to be done REALLY slowly - almost drop by drop.

Do not be tempted to hurry - you will ruin the mixture!

Next, in another bowl, beat the remaining egg yolk then add the oil-egg mixture to this very slowly again - beating in between.

Then, in a thin drizzle, add the remaining oil, beating constantly

When all the oil is added, add the lemon juice.

Start with 1 tablespoon full, beat in, then taste. Add more if you want it a bit more lemony. The lemon juice will lighten the color of the mayo. Adjust the salt too, if needed.

You will end up with approximately 2 cups of mayonnaise.

This is pure mayonnaise, so use it up within a couple of days. Store it well covered in the refrigerator.

Stuffed Marrows - Qarabaghli mimli

Very common in the Maltese household, these stuffed marrows are just as good cold. Other recipes use rikotta for the filling but I prefer the traditional way.

Ingredients
800 grms large marrows - not "zucchini" type but if only those are available use the largest possible.
1 large onion finely chopped
1 clove of garlic minced
2 fresh bay leaves
3 large tomatoes, chopped
2 tbls tomato paste
600 grams minced beef (Traditionally, 300gms meat and 300gms corned beef - the type you get in a can- was used - frugal gourmet style!)
150 grams of bacon (vegetarians can use 700gms of ricotta mixed with some parsley and a bit of milk)
2 eggs beaten
4 tbls of grated parmesan cheese
Olive oil
Semolina
Sea salt & freshly ground pepper

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F
2. Cut the marrows lengthwise in half and scoop out the insides with a teaspoon. Reserve about half the pulp.
3. Fry the onion, garlic and bay in some olive oil until soft. Add the chopped tomatoes and tomato paste and cook for a further few minutes.
4. Place the bacon in a food processor and blend until finely minced.
5. Add the beef and bacon to the onion mix and cook until done. (vegetarians, add the ricotta mix)
6. Stir in the marrow pulp and then allow to cool.
7. Once cool add the eggs and cheese and season the mixture to taste.
8. Fill the marrow halves with the meat mixture and then lightly sprinkle with semolina. Place in a lightly oiled baking dish and then drizzle a little more olive oil over the filled marrows
9. Bake for about 45 minutes until the meat mixture is golden and crisp. Another alternative is to slice about 6 potatoes and an onion and place them on a dish, then add the stuffed marrows and cook the whole thing together. A great meal in one dish!

Bovril!!! This is a beef extract that can be used to make a broth or else on buttered toast. YUMMEEE..I think there is something similar that is vegetarian called Vegemite which is also yeast based but Bovril is the best.

Kinnie! This is an acquired taste...
in Italy you can get something similar
called chinotto - but not the same!
Kinnie is made of a blend of herbs and citrus.

Twistees! Great cheesy
Snacks - I guess you could
compare them to cheetos
but they are unique!

Pastizzi! made with ricotta cheese filling or peas. Also can be found in some parts of Canada and Australia - UNIQUE! They are called cheesecakes but have no resemblance to cheesecake as you would know it!

English Trifle

Trifle is one of the oldest English deserts..and my favourite.

The word trifle derives from the Middle English trufl which in turn came from the Old French trufe (or truffle), meaning something of little importance.

Originally, in the late 16th century, the culinary meaning of the word trifle was a dish composed of cream boiled with various ingredients... Trifle is the one of the richest English desserts and it is served on special occasions like Christmas.

This is an easy way to make it.

Ingredients:

About 2 pints of custard - see the previous recipe.

I sometimes make on pint of chocolate custard and one pint vanilla, just to vary

1 pre cooked sponge cake - or you can make one yourself, cut horizontally in thin slices

Some Sherry

Some apricot jam

2 tins Nestle's Cream (this give the best result - if you can't find it whipped cream will do)

Method:

You can use a round or square glass bowl - i prefer the square one.

Take some of the sponge and place on the bottom of the dish.

Melt the apricot jam and spread across the sponge.

Add a good splash of sherry

Add the custard.

Repeat the above except for the jam as that it just on the first layer.

End with a think layer of nestles cream.

You can always drizzle some chocolate on the top and make a pattern.

This is DELICIOUS!

English Custard

Serves 8

INGREDIENTS

2 cups (500ml) milk

6 egg yolks

1 cup (200g) sugar

1 vanilla pod

rind of one small lemon - thickly cut

PREPARATION

Heat milk in a saucepan with the vanilla and lemon rind

Bring to the boil.

Remove from heat and cool a little.

Beat egg yolks and sugar in a mixing bowl for about 10 minutes or until light and fluffy.

Little by little, stir in warm milk until well mixed.

Cook stirring constantly with a whisk untei mixture starts to thicken (Do not allow to boil). Remove from heat, place over a pan of ice and allow to cool completely, stirring from time to time.

You can serve this custard as a dessert or use it as garnish or filling of another dessert like the ENGLISH TRIFLE....which will be my next post!

For the second square, leave the stitch on the needle. While looking at the front of your work, pick up and knit 7 stitches along the left side of the diamond, then using the knitted cast on, cast on 8. - 16 sts in all
Repeat the 14 rows above.

You can knit a strip like this and use it as an edging.

Here are the pics of the hat i made using mitered corners. I made 6 of the squares, joined them together then knitted up 80 sts. The top was formed by sewing up 4 sets of 20 stitches to form the star points.

This was fun!

Looking (and seeming) well off is more of a way of life than due to your bank account.

If you can give the impression of being rich and classy - people actually believe it!

However i need to emphasise my definition of CLASS. Unlike popular belief, class is not something that can be bought - it is a way of behaviour, a certain respect for others and yourself that is only acquired through upbringing or, in some rare exceptions, by re-invention. Money has NOTHING to do with class.

A classy person always does some research on the people he/she will be meeting or socializing with. (the Queen DOES NOT LIKE to be touched - its breaking protocol! And do not try to shake hands with a Japanese dignitary - that's also a no no! DO YOUR HOMEWORK!)

Do not chew gum - at least not in public

So having established that - lets move on to looking rich.

Classic clothes always beat the latest fashions which, unless you are exceptionally good looking and slim, can rarely seem classy - they are, after all, a fleeting moment in fashion.

The must have little black dress, a string of pearls (they don't have to be real but must not look fake so read up on colour and size), skirts no shorter than 3" above the knees, leather shoes or pumps (better have a few leather shoes than many plastic ones!) all these items are a good start.

Look for bargains at second hand stores - I bought a cashmere sweater for $10.00 and a Versace black dress for $25.00 as well a some Max Mara tops for a few dollars.

Clothes don't have to be new, they just have to be good quality.

Short skirts and most sleeveless tops can be a disaster unless you have perfect legs and arms. If you have a big ass DON'T wear pants. If you have big boobs DON'T show them off with a low cut top...that's just trashy!!

Don't go overboard with jewelry - less is definitely more in this case. If you have a great pair of earrings don't wear loads of necklaces - stick to a ring or two to space the distance.

If you have a great bracelet, do not wear an overpowering ring.

And, diamonds are still a girls best friend but cost a pretty penny! buy cubic zircona instead - as long as you don't go over 1 carat, zircona will look like diamonds to everyone except the most discerning. If you go for a mega stone - then your charade may fall flat!

On the beach, unless you are under 35 or have an exceptional figure wear a one piece. Nothing looks more ridiculous than mutton dressed as lamb!

DO NOT TALK ABOUT MONEY - or ask people how much they earn -that's the epitome of bad manners. People with money don't need to mention what things cost, nor do they appear to care.

Be well groomed - you don't have to have a $200.00 hair cut - try hair dressing schools - you can get a great cut for pennies.

Make up should be kept to a minimum - unless you are an expert in putting on makeup. Too much makes you look desperate!

Having said that, I am sure i am betraying my age by writing this but, as i said before, class cannot be bought - you either have it or you don't!

Think of Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn - now that's class!!

(ps - i just read some comments of an article where people were criticising the author who recommended dressing well for an interview - most of them thought that what they looked like shouldn't matter. I think they forget that the first impression is STILL the most important. Most people do not have the time or inclination to dig deeper and chances may be lost because your visual impression did not reflect your real worth.)

My sister's closet is full of clothes....some bought over 20 years ago..that have come back into fashion! To part with anything kills her!

Result- she rarely buys anything new...her closet is too full!!

Me? I throw stuff away about four times a year - my local goodwill houses most of my clothes. If I lose or gain weight, out with the old and in with the new. I have discovered a great 'recycled' clothing shop where i buy designer items for a fraction of the cost - and sometimes they still have tags on!

PLUS- i always have clothes that fit and can afford quality I would otherwise not be able too.

Who is doing the right thing? I'd love to know what you all (y'all) think!!!

Feather and Fan Stitch

In the Feather and Fan stitch, the increase is a basic, open Yarn Over (YO) and the decrease is simply knitting two stitches together (k2tog).

The patterns in lace are created by the location of the decrease in relation to the increase, as well as the type of decrease used.

Cast on any amount (divisible by 18) plus any amount for border.
Keep these border stitches in Knit Only (both sides).
Work 8 rows of knit only at the beginning and ending of your piece.

Row 1: Knit to end of row
Row 2: Purl to end of row
Row 3: K2tog 3 times, (YO, K1) 6 times, K2tog 3 times, repeat across the row
Row 4: Knit to end of row

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern. Work until desired length. End by working 8 rows Knit

Variations of the Feather and Fan work with multiples of 18 plus 1 and multiples of 18 plus 2, adding the stitches at the beginning and end of Row 3.

Lacy Stretchy Knit Stitch

Row 1: Knit 4, *(yarn over) twice, knit 4. Repeat from * across.

Row 2: Purl 2, *purl 2 together, purl 1, knit 1 (those are the yarn overs from the previous row), purl 2 together. Repeat from * across, end purl 2.

Row 3: Knit 2, yarn over, *knit 4, (yarn over) twice). Repear from * across, end knit 4, yarn over, knit 2.

Row 4: Purl 3, *(purl 2 together) twice, purl 1, knit 1 (those are the yarn overs from the previous row). Repeat from * across, end (purl 2 together) twice, purl 3.

Repeat these rows for pattern.
Note: stitch count will vary as increases on right-side rows are not decreased until wrong-side rows.

Customize a T Shirt

This is an easy way to customize a child's T shirt without needing any special talent!

The shirts I use are 100% cotton that have been pre washed.

What you need:
A cotton T shirt
Cold water dye
Elastic Bands
Iron on transfers
Iron on sparkles/diamonds/etc

What you do:
Make sure the T shirt is wet - squeeze out extra water.

Use the elastic bads to tie up the wet t shirt randomly - for example lots of ties on the top and bottom and none in the middle or vice versa.

Dye as per instructions on the dye you bought - but leave for half the time so that the colour will look 'faded"

Rinse and dry.

Iron on the transfer and the sparkles...

You now have a 'vintage' T shirt!!

If you dont have dye, you can actually use TEA - brew some VERY strong tea and use instead of the dye.

You will get a faded brownish colour that really looks unique!

In my effort to recyle i have made a burp cloths, wash cloths and little wipes that are GREAT for removing make up!!

I use fabric from old clothes, towels and remnants, back them with terry or a soft fabric and overlock the edges - couldn't be easier!

They are great as reusable wipes, face cloths or baby burpies.

An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly rather true.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain
- why the early bird gets the worm
- life isn't always fair
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death,
by his parents, Truth and Trust,
by his wife, Discretion,
by his daughter, Responsibility,
and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
- I Know My Rights
- I Want It Now
- Someone Else Is To Blame
- I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on.

Bragioli (beef olives) recipe

Here's a great maltese recipe!

BRAGIOLI (Beef Olives)

no olives here!!

10 thin slices of rump steak
Stuffing:
1/2 lb ground beef
6 bacon strips
2 hard-boiled eggs
2 tbsp chopped parsley
4 tbsp bread crumbs
1 carrot grated
pepper and salt

Sauce:
2 large onions, chopped
3 garlic cloves, crushed
4 tomatoes, peeled and chopped
1 tsp tomato paste
2 carrots, scraped and sliced
1/2 cup peas
2 potatoes, peeled and quartered
2 bay leaves
1 tsp Worchestershire sauce
1/2 cup red wine

-- In a bowl combine all stuffing ingredients.
-- Pound and flatten slices of steak.
-- Spoon about 2 tbsp of stuffing on each meat slice. Roll up slice.
Use string or toothpicks to secure rolled-up meat.
-- In a saucepan cook for a few minutes onion and garlic in enough water
to cover onion. Add beef rolls and brown over medium heat.
-- Remove beef rolls from saucepan and set aside.
-- Add potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, tomato paste, herbs, and wine to
saucepan. Add pepper and salt to taste. Stir gently and cook for
about 10 minutes.
-- Return beef rolls in saucepan, add peas and bring to boil. Reduce
heat and simmer to thicken sauce. Add wine if mixture begins to dry up
before meat is thoroughly cooked.

Follow the pattern to make up the motifs.

Big Flower Motif:Rnds 1-3: Same as small flower motif.Rnd 4: ( ch 5, skip 2 sc and 1 dc, sc on the next dc, ch 5, skip 1 dc and 1 sc, sc on the next sc) 6 times, join. Rnd 5: [ 5 sc in next loop, 1 picot (ch 3, 1 sc on the 1st ch), 5 sc on next loop] 6 times, join. Fasten off.

Easy instructions for cable - i found this on a great site Knitting cables for dummies

The simple technique of cabling (crossing one group of stitches over another) lends itself to many interpretations in knitting. It's easy to do, you can make all kinds of interesting and imaginative cable patterns. All it takes is a little patience and practice.

You can make any kind of cable by suspending (holding) a number of stitches on a cable needle (cn) while you knit that same number of stitches from the LH needle. Then you knit the suspended stitches either by returning them to the LH needle and knitting them or by knitting them straight from the cable needle. This process of knitting stitches out of order enables you to cross stitches, creating cables. Whether you're making simple or intricate cables, all you're doing is crossing stitches. Easy, right?

Standard or rope cables are the most basic cables. They generally cross stitches predictably up a single column of stitches. You can make a rope cable over almost any even number of stitches from two to twelve — or more.

If you want to make a cable that looks like it's twisting to the left, you hold your suspended stitches in front of your work while you knit from the LH needle.
If you want to make a cable that twists to the right, hold the suspended stitches in back.

To try a 6-stitch left-twisting cable, cast on 14 stitches and then follow these steps:

1. Work Row 1 (RS): P4, k6, p4.
The first and last k4 (knit four) stitches make up the background fabric for your cable. The six stitches in the middle are where you'll form your cable stitches.

2. Work Row 2: K4, p6, k4.

3. Work Row 3: P4, k6, p4. (same as row 1).

4. Work Row 4: k4, p6, k4 (same as row 2).

5. Work Row 5, the turning row: P4, sl 3 sts to cn and hold in front (see Figure 1a), k3 from LH needle (see Figure 1b), k3 from cn (see Figure 1c), p4.

6. Work Row 6: K4, p6, k4 (same as Row 2).
Instead of knitting stitches directly from the cable needle, you may prefer to return the suspended stitches to the LH needle before you knit them. Try both ways and use whichever technique is more comfortable to you.
When you suspend stitches on the cable needle, let the cable needle dangle down in front of your work, giving the yarn a slight tug to keep it taut (you don't need to close the gap).

7. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 and watch your stockinette stitches become a cabled rope.

When you work cables, you go back and forth from purl stitches to knit stitches. From a knit to a purl stitch, bring your yarn between the needles to the front before you make the next stitch. From a purl to a knit stitch, bring your yarn between the needles to the back before you make the next stitch.

Sew cast-on and bound-off ends of Strap/Gusset tog being careful not to twist. Placing seam at center of lower edge, sew side edges of Strap/Gusset to lower and side edges of back and front leaving remaining edge free for strap. Sew side edges of strap tog forming a tube.
Edging: With RS facing, using crochet hook and 2 strands of yarn held tog, beg at side, work in Reverse sc around seam joining gusset and front of bag, working through double thickness, then across top of bag, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Work in same manner around seam joining gusset and back of bag, then around outer edge of flap, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off. Fold flap down, then work in Reverse sc across fold, working through double thickness of flap and bag. Fasten off.

Tassels (Make 4): Cut one 8” long strand of yarn and one 12” long strand of yarn. Wrap yarn multiple times around a 3” long piece of cardboard. Cut the lower end to free wrapped strands. Tie the center of strands with 8” long strand. Fold strands in half over tie and wrap 12” long strand around all strands 1” down from top. Tie and draw ends into center of tassel. With crochet hook, join single strand of yarn in top of first tassel, make a chain 18” long, join in top of second tassel. Fasten off. Repeat with third and fourth tassels. Tie one chain around each side of strap as in photo. With crochet hook, join single strand of yarn in WS of flap edging 3/4” to the left of center. Make a chain 1 1/2” long, then join in WS of flap edging 3/4” to the right of center forming buttonloop. Sew button to front of bag under buttonloop.

Cable knit Hat

I was sent this great pattern...not sure where it came from but its great to knit!

Materials:
One size 16" #7 or #8 round knitting needle
Four size #7 or #8 double pointed knitting needles
One cable needle
Acrylic or cotton yarn (about one ball)

Directions:
Cast on 88 stitches on round needle (or you can knit in the round with the stitches divided between three double pointed needles).Round #1: knit 3, purl 1 for the entire round.Repeat Round #1 until 2" are completed.

Start Pattern:
Row 1: P2, K6, P2, K1 (repeat for entire round).Rows 2 - 4: repeat Row #1 three more times.Row 5: P2, slip next three stitches onto cable needle and hold in back of work, K3, knit stitches from the cable needle, P2, K1 (repeat for entire round).Rows 6-8: Repeat Row #1 three more times.Repeat these 8 rows for pattern until hat measures about 5" from beginning of pattern (7" from beginning of cap)

Shaping:
If you have been knitting with the 16" round needle, then divide stitches onto the double pointed needles. (Place 28 stitches on the first and second needles, place 32 stitches on the third needle.)
Row 1: K2 sts together, K9. Repeat across entire row.Row 2: K2 sts together, K8. Repeat across entire row.Row 3: K2 sts together, K7. Repeat across entire row.Row 4: K2 sts together, K6. Repeat across entire row.Row 5: K2 sts together, K5. Repeat across entire row.Row 6: K2 sts together, K4. Repeat across entire row.Row 7: K2 sts together, K3. Repeat across entire row.Row 8: K2 sts together, K2. Repeat across entire row.Row 9: K2 sts together, K1. Repeat across entire row.Row 10: K2 sts together across entire row.

Finishing:
Cut the yarn, leaving a 10" tail. Thread it through the remaining stitches and draw up tightly, weaving in the end.

These are so easy to make!!

Chain the length you would like them to be - you will need to calculate how much you;d need for the tie - about 2/3 of the length. This will be the middle part.

Start by 3 double crochet in each loop - this forms the curl

The middle is just one double crochet in each loop

The end is like the beginning! three double crochet in each loop

thats it!

Easy!
